Do Impact Windows Need Screens? Separate Insect Control from Storm Protection¿Las ventanas de impacto necesitan mosquiteros? Funciones y diferencias
Choose insect screens for operable impact windows without confusing mesh with hurricane protection, fall prevention, or emergency escape.
Impact windows and insect screens serve different purposes. An operable window may have an optional or included insect screen for ventilation, but the mesh does not establish the window’s hurricane rating.
If you normally keep the air conditioning on and windows closed, screen selection may seem unimportant. It becomes more relevant when you want fresh air, need to clean the opening, or must remove and store a screen. Decide how you will use each window before the order is finalized.
Ask what is included for each opening
Do not assume “screens included” describes the whole house. Request a room-by-room list tied to the quoted window styles.
For every operable opening, ask whether the screen is full, partial, sliding, removable, or another manufacturer-specific arrangement. Identify its location and how it is released. Fixed glazing does not open for ventilation, so ask why a screen would be proposed there.
Confirm whether replacements are standard parts or need the original frame dimensions and product identification.
Insect mesh is not a storm-protection claim
Ordinary insect screens and separately engineered hurricane screens are different products. If anyone proposes a protective screen system, request its own approval, anchorage, limitations, and project review.
For the window itself, verify the exact assembly through the Florida product-approval database and manufacturer documentation. Do not infer approval from the appearance of the mesh, a “heavy-duty” description, or the fact that glass is laminated.
Ask the supplier to explain the required window operating condition for storms and the manufacturer’s instructions for any removable accessories. Follow the product-specific instructions; do not wait for dangerous weather to work outside or on ladders. Our hurricane-season checklist helps organize advance preparation.
Screens are not fall-prevention devices
Andersen’s window-safety guidance explicitly warns against relying on insect screens to prevent falls. Their insect-control role should never be mistaken for a barrier that can support a child or pet.
Discuss appropriate safety devices with the supplier and responsible professional if an opening presents a fall concern. Avoid adding improvised locks or mesh barriers that could interfere with an emergency escape opening. See our bedroom egress planning guide before changing how a bedroom window operates.
Compare the view and daily handling
Look through representative screen samples if unobstructed views are a priority. Ask the manufacturer about mesh options, cleaning instructions, and compatibility with the exact window.
Have someone demonstrate removal and replacement from the intended side. Ask where a removed screen can be stored without bending the frame, how it is identified for the correct opening, and whether cleaning requires professional access.
For households with pets, discuss wear and replacement expectations. A product marketed for pet durability should not be treated as a fall-protection device.
Put the screen choice on the order
A useful screen schedule records opening identifier, window series, screen type, frame finish, mesh option, release method, and whether it is included in the price. It also identifies any opening where a screen has intentionally been omitted.
At handoff, ask for a demonstration and the relevant care instructions. Keep part numbers with the window records. Report poor fit or damaged clips rather than modifying the window frame to accommodate an accessory.
For impact windows, contact ClearView with your ventilation preferences and room list. Selecting screens alongside the windows helps avoid an overlooked accessory decision after installation.
